Education and skills deprivation across London neighbourhoods

Education, Skills and Training deprivation, rebased for London (2019)

What does this indicator show?

This indicator shows the level of education deprivation in London’s neighbourhoods. An area with more severe education deprivation will have, for example, lower levels of attainment, training opportunities or skills within the population.

It uses the English Indices of Deprivation, which gives each neighbourhood an overall deprivation score. It does this by combining data from seven areas known as domains, one of which is education and skills.

For this indicator, we have excluded all non-London neighbourhoods and divided them into five equal groups - known as quintiles. This allows us to quickly see which areas of London have the highest levels of education deprivation. Darker neighbourhoods face the highest levels, lighter areas the least.

What does it tell us?

There are clear divides across London, with some boroughs having a large concentration of neighbourhoods with the highest education deprivation. For example, much of Havering, Hounslow and Hillingdon have the highest levels - as well as the eastern half of Enfield.

In the South West of London there are large pockets with lower levels of education deprivation. But even in these areas, there are small pockets with more education deprivation - such as in parts of Wandsworth, and the southern half of Kingston.
