Proportion of households in poverty by ethnicity (2023/24)
Last updated: June 2025

What does this indicator show?
This indicator shows the proportion of people living in poverty in London and the rest of England (after housing costs) split by ethnicity.
What does it tell us?
Poverty rates differ significantly across London’s ethnic groups. Bangladeshi Londoners have the highest poverty rate, with 62% being counted as in-poverty. This is followed by the “any other Asian background” group for whom the poverty rate is 47%.
Every ethnic group listed here other than Indian, Mixed and Chinese is at least twice as likely to be in poverty than white Londoners.
How does this differ from the rest of England?
Poverty rates for minority ethnic groups follow the same order in both London and the rest of England. Most groups have similar poverty rates in London and the rest of England. The exception is the Bangladeshi community, who have a poverty rate 11 percentage points higher in London than in the rest of England.
The ethnicity categories shown here are ONS harmonised - which mean they’re standardised terms used by the government. The labels we use are the same as those in the HBAI survey variables guide.
