Young Londoners Manifesto 2024 calls on the future Mayor of London to be ambitious about young people in the capital.
12% of London’s population is aged 15-24. But young Londoners are significantly more likely to be unemployed than older adults. They’re also more likely to be in debt.
Ahead of May 2024's mayoral election, this manifesto sets out how the future Mayor of London can ensure young people in the city are able to fulfil their potential. It also includes a number of commitments for the youth sector.
The Young Londoners Manifesto 2024 was developed with young Londoners by the Partnership for Young London and London Youth. Several organisations have signed up as supporters of the manifesto. Join them here.
The manifesto calls on the future Mayor of London to:
- Commit to creating a strategy for children that cuts across all GLA teams, and appoint a Deputy Mayor for Young people who focuses on improving outcomes for young people across the GLA and championing their successes and achievements.
- Share power with young people, leading by example through innovative approaches to youth participation, such as peer research, peer evaluation, participatory grant making, to engage all young Londoners to shape policy. On top of this, reach out to young people in a range of spaces outside of city hall, and ensuring GLA structures are accessible to young people.
- Champion the views and needs of young people on a range of issues, to tackle the inequality they face. This includes championing young people's health and wellbeing needs and housing needs, such as by creating a youth homelessness strategy. Champion the views and needs of specific groups of young people with particular needs, such as ethnic minorities.
- Continue to sustain and grow the GLA's investment in young people and youth provision across London, supporting the investment in the youth workforce across London and championing a more sustainable approach to funding.
