In early 2025, the London Housing Panel supported a series of community conversations with people living in social housing, whose voices are often not heard in discussions about planning and delivering new homes.
The conversations were hosted by members of the Panel and its partners across a range of types of housing and different communities of geography and interest.
The perspectives of residents - on their homes, their areas, and what social housing is and is not delivering, are contained within this Findings report. It has been presented to the GLA, and will be of interest to policymakers, local and national, across the UK.
Key Messages
The London Housing Panel wants the city’s housing growth to be built on lessons from the past in order to understand how we got here, what has worked well and what needs to happen now in order to make the best use of the opportunity to build new homes.
The London Housing Panel wants homes for the long term which have been thought through with the communities who will live in them. By working together, we can shape homes and communities that are more affordable, accessible and culturally sensitive for all.
We can do this by:
- Strengthening processes for communication, community voice and co-production, and developer accountability.
- Planning for the long-term affordability, ongoing management and maintenance, and location of new homes.
- Designing for the safety and accessibility of homes that meet everyone’s needs including in high-rise housing developments.
