The challenge
Our social security system should be there as a safety net for all of us, when we need it most. But the current system isn’t protecting people from poverty.
Many people who rely on the social security system payments are unable to make ends meet, and are going without essentials. Despite this, most discussions about the system and political announcement focuses on the burden to the taxpayer.
The project
The Disability Policy Centre is a leading disability think tank, working with the disability sector, academics and policymakers to put accessibility and lived experience at the heart of legislation.
This project will gather the views of disabled people and unpaid carers on welfare reform. Through surveys, roundtables and paid participation, it will highlight what disabled people and carers need from the system, how assessments could work better, and the wider value of social security.
The findings will counterbalance cost-focused debates with evidence on wellbeing, health and care impacts. Insights will feed into an accessible report with policy recommendations, launched at Westminster to influence national discussion and shape a fairer welfare system.
